What is the SEO Audit and what is it for?

An SEO Audit is the health analysis of any type of digital property, be it an app or a website. It is a detailed technical audit that every website and eCommerce should perform to increase its visibility on search engines. It allows a meticulous diagnosis of a site by detecting every element considered important to search engines, from the most minute technical aspects to content structure through a series of onsite and offsite checks.

When we provide the client with a comprehensive SEO Audit, we at ByTek deliver a detailed document detailing both any issues detected and the actions to be taken to resolve them.

It is therefore an indispensable preliminary analysis and preparatory to any other larger intervention: for example, it is not possible to structure an SEO strategy without first having carried out a comprehensive and exhaustive analysis. This is because only through an SEO Audit is it possible to identify the margins for growth and improvement in terms of a site’s visibility. Only by identifying critical issues is it possible to take action to resolve them, devising a strategy aimed at making the site competitive on search engines.

How to do a complete SEO Audit

Highlighting problems and analyzing critical issues means removing all those obstacles that prevent a site from functioning perfectly. A comprehensive examination of text quality, HTML code, crawl budget and many other ranking factors must be carried out.

First, we seek to understand whether:

  • The browsing experience is satisfactory;
  • Search engines read the sitemap;
  • Google recognizes you.

Then we carry out a series of scans regarding the quality of back-links, their optimization, as well as that of images and videos. All the verification work is done through the use of established tools and methodologies, with a mixture of professionalism and new technologies. Therefore, it is not a simple automatic scan but a methodological work where “human” assessment is supported by tools and new technologies. Therefore, if you are interested in conducting a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of your site for a strategic activity, DIY is not a good idea: ask us for a free comprehensive SEO Audit quote!

What are the basic steps of an SEO Audit?

Professionalism and certain data: the SEO Audit has to consider an endless array of data and the risk of getting lost is very high. At ByTek, we rely on tools that provide certain data such as Google Search Console, Analytics, Ahref, Screaming Frog.

Initial assessment

We start with a thorough study of the client, going through a careful analysis of the optimization status of SEO ranking factors.

The initial assessment is done with the help of tools such as Google Search Console to understand the health of the site, ranking data, impressions, clicks and CTR. Also check performance in relation to specific queries.

Site indexing

Also through Google Search Console, it is possible to check the indexing status of pages, checking for any exclusions. At this stage, the following is analyzed

  • the robots.txt, a text file that contains indications of which pages are accessible and which are not, making sure that it is spelled correctly and that the correct URL is indicated at the end of the file;
  • the sitemap.xml, which contains information about pages, images, videos and other files on the site that is used by search engines to “read” the site quickly, checking it for errors.
  • The implementation of canonical tags, that the canonical URL references the page and is set correctly to avoid duplication and cannibalization.

Analysis of information architecture

The way in which content is organized and the hierarchical importance given to topics on the site is analyzed, assessing their accessibility for search engines and users and how these are related to each other.

In particular, the following should be checked:

  • The depth of navigation, i.e., the number of clicks between the content on the home page to the single piece of content to which search engines assign importance: the fewer clicks needed to pass through, the greater the importance given.
  • The structure of the URLs: a short and easily understood URL increases the likelihood of clicks and facilitates the indexing process.

Status Code Verification

Status code is the code with which the server responds to the request made by a resource from the browser. During an SEO Audit, among many others, the following status codes may, for example, emerge:

  • 404 – page not found, an error that should be corrected as soon as possible because when a user comes across a page not found, 99 times out of 100 they abandon the site. Not only that. By not finding the resource, spiders will not continue the crawling process.
  • 301 – the page has been moved, but in this case you need to check that the redirects are set correctly.
  • 5xx – server error, due to different reasons such as errors in code implementation or redirect rules. Also in this case it is good to take action as soon as possible.

HTML code analysis

HTML code analysis is very important because it is the code analyzed by search engine spiders. During this step the things to check are:

  • Absence of internal links in nofollow, because otherwise search engines would not follow it
  • Use of breadcrumbs, which are the “tracks” that indicate the position of the page within the AI. These “breadcrumbs” are important because they serve the user to orient themselves in navigation and search engines because they facilitate crawling processes.
  • Title Tag and Meta Description, the former is ranking factor, the latter is not, but it appears in SERPs, so it affects CTR.
  • Content: texts must be optimized, contain the right structure, heading tags and, above all, the necessary information to satisfy user requests.
  • Images: images must also be optimized with their own file name and alt tags.

Site loading speed

A site that loads pages poorly is a site that is easily abandoned by surfers. But site speed is not only important as a user’s browsing experience, because it is also a major ranking factor. Tools such as Google PageSpeed Insight or GTMetrix are used to do this. Tools that offer useful data and suggestions for solving problems.

Structured Data Verification

To describe the content to search engines by adding information and details but in a structured way, codes are added to the pages that help to understand what is being talked about. It is the structured data, which must be as search-appropriate as possible, that is very useful in terms of ranking. In fact, their addition to news pages, blogs and articles can improve the site’s ranking in Google results.

To implement them, Schema.org is used, which detects their presence or absence by giving the possibility to correct any errors.

The structured data to check are many and specific for each function: publishing an article, a book, a recipe, or for events, recipes and more. Among the main ones to check are:

  • Organization: markup that gives information about the ownership of the site
  • Breadcrumb list: markup that within the AI identifies a specific page
  • Article: markup that gives information about articles and content such as publication date and author
  • Product: gives information about product pages such as price, reviews, availability, etc.
  • Event: data that gives information about a specific event, such as date, location, duration, etc.

In particular, given the increasing use of voice assistants, it is very important for example to implement the property, because it is the one that identifies within a web page the parts that are most suitable for audio playback via text-to-speech (TTS). Adding structured data means giving the Google assistant the ability to immediately identify content to be reported and distributed to a wide audience.

Technical SEO analysis: why it is strategic

Only the SEO Audit guarantees an accurate check of the site, from its functionality to content to internal links.

Through the SEO Audit; at ByTek, we identify the errors that prevent a site from its proper functioning and thus its ranking. This is a diagnostic analysis that gets directly to the causes and therefore allows us to study the best solutions. Without a thorough check, you will never be able to understand the limits and potential of a site: any further steps would be practically useless.

SEO Audit by ByTek

Among the several SEO Audits done in recent years, the one studied for a leading Italian company in the production of extractor hoods should definitely be mentioned. A detailed analysis referred to a client operating in a very specific market.

We intervened with a data-driven methodology that, thanks to the use of proprietary technologies and AI, proposed concrete growth solutions.

These are just some of the issues highlighted by ByTek’s SEO Audit:

  • PDF pages not indexed
  • Breadcrumbs not optimized
  • presence of 207 resources with status code” 404 not found”
  • external duplication of content (mostly single products)
  • internal duplication of content (PDF with instructions)

But above all, by analyzing the target market and players, significant gaps emerged at the level of keyword set coverage and information architecture, as important areas capable of intercepting and satisfying users’ needs were absent.

Only through this timely analysis was it possible to propose targeted and remedial interventions.

Any growth experience cannot disregard a basic strategic assessment: the SEO Audit is exactly that initial check that allows to overcome all the gaps that prevent a site and the project contained in it from taking off.
